About Me
Whilst recovering from a serious road accident I was made redundant and was relying on benefits for the first time in my life. I realised that with my commitments at home, which were now greater than they had ever been, that I couldn’t return to work following my previous career path. My husband, who was also involved in the accident, had very serious injuries that doctors had given very little hope of being able to heal on their own, and it was at this time I became interested in Holistic and alternative therapies to see if there was any way in which I could help with his recovery. I studied the prospectus at local colleges, and from this began a series of intensive and in depth courses in numerous areas of Holistic therapies.
I soon discovered that I had a passion for this, and knew I had found my new career path. To broaden my skills base, I also completed courses in Beauty therapy, and it was when I had followed on from this to a course teaching spray tanning that I had a very upsetting and life changing experience. As part of the course, and to obtain our certificates, the students had to spray tan each other. I had mine without any problem, and expected to carry it out on the student that had just successfully given me mine, and this was where it happened. She refused to let me tan her, and would not undress to allow me to complete the tan, and after a lengthy talk and a lot of coaxing I discovered that it was due to a disfigurement that was the remnants of a serious illness. I reassured her that this was not a problem in any way, and explained that for me, due to the life experiences I have been through first hand, that there was nothing that I would not be able to deal with or see as being different from the norm. It seemed such a small thing – a tanning treatment, yet she was overjoyed to have had something that made her feel so good; and it was that reaction that touched and affected me so deeply, and my outlook would be forever changed.
I immediately began to look at whether there was a large segment of our society that were not being catered for, and all because they had their own barriers after illness or due to disability, as I knew I could make such a huge difference to their lives and their own perceptions of the Beauty industry as a whole. For a period of 6 weeks throughout the school summer holidays I gave my time and services for free to several different charities in the local area that I had had dealings with directly or had helped me on my own journey to recovery. By doing this I gained experience that was invaluable to me in various ways, such as being able to adapt my treatments to suit the individual and their needs, to realising and understanding that there were people with emotional issues that were so busy caring for others that they never found the time or opportunity to allow somebody to provide them with some much needed TLC.
After discovering that there were so many people that wanted to benefit from my treatments I began to look for suitable and accessible premises, that would not be intimidating in any way to my customers.
In November ’08 I began working from my business premises, and I have never looked back. I am passionate about my work and get to meet some lovely people and see the benefits that Holistic treatments can give to the mind, body and spirit.
